Almost everyone has bad breath occasionally, but persistent bad breath (halitosis) can be embarrassing — and it’s usually a sign of something fixable in the mouth.
Common causes
- Bacteria building up on the tongue and between the teeth
- Poor brushing and flossing
- Gum disease
- A dry mouth (less saliva to wash bacteria away)
- Strong foods like onion and garlic
- Smoking and tobacco
How to fix it
- Brush twice daily and clean between your teeth
- Gently clean your tongue, where odour-causing bacteria gather
- Stay well hydrated to keep your mouth moist
- Keep up regular check-ups and cleaning
- Cut down on tobacco and very strong foods
When it’s more than hygiene
If bad breath persists despite good oral care, it’s worth a dental visit — it can be linked to gum disease, an untreated cavity or a dry mouth. Occasionally it relates to sinus, throat or digestive issues, in which case we’ll point you toward the right care. A check-up and cleaning is the best first step to a fresher, healthier mouth.
