Crooked teeth and bite problems (known as malocclusion) are very common, in both children and adults. They’re more than a cosmetic concern — alignment affects how well you can clean your teeth, how evenly you chew, and how confident you feel about your smile.
Common types
- Crowding — too little space, so teeth overlap or twist
- Spacing — noticeable gaps between teeth
- Overbite — upper front teeth sit too far over the lower
- Underbite — lower teeth sit in front of the upper
- Crossbite and open bite — the teeth don’t meet correctly
What causes them?
Alignment is partly genetic — inherited jaw and tooth size. It can also be influenced by prolonged thumb-sucking or pacifier habits and by losing a baby tooth too early, which lets the neighbouring teeth drift into the space meant for the permanent tooth.
Why it’s worth correcting
- Straight teeth are easier to clean, lowering decay and gum-disease risk
- An even bite spreads chewing forces and reduces wear and jaw strain
- A confident smile makes a real difference day to day
How crooked teeth are corrected
Most alignment issues are treated with braces or clear aligners. The right option depends on your case and goals — our guide to braces vs clear aligners compares them. For children, an early orthodontic check around age seven lets us guide jaw development at the ideal stage. Book an assessment to see what suits you.
