Teething is a normal milestone, usually starting around six months, though it varies widely from baby to baby. The first teeth to appear are typically the two bottom front teeth.
Signs of teething
- More drooling than usual
- Wanting to bite or chew on things
- Mild gum swelling or tenderness
- Irritability or disturbed sleep
- A slightly raised temperature (not a true fever)
Soothing your baby safely
A clean, chilled (not frozen) teething ring, or a gentle gum massage with a clean finger, can bring relief. For older babies, chilled soft foods can help too.
What to avoid
Skip teething gels containing benzocaine, and avoid amber teething necklaces — both carry safety risks (medication concerns, and choking or strangulation) and aren’t recommended. Importantly, a true high fever, diarrhoea or a genuinely unwell baby is not caused by teething — contact your paediatrician if that happens.
Start dental care early
Once that first tooth appears, begin caring for it right away, and plan a first dental visit by age one. Our pediatric dental care supports families from the very first tooth.
