Active kids love sport — but a stray ball, an elbow or a fall can chip, displace or knock out a tooth in an instant. A mouthguard is a simple, comfortable way to protect your child’s smile.
Why mouthguards matter
Dental injuries are common in contact and ball sports such as cricket, football, hockey and basketball, as well as in skating and cycling. A mouthguard cushions blows to the mouth and can prevent broken or lost teeth — injuries that may otherwise need lifelong care.
Types of mouthguard
- Stock guards — cheap but bulky and loose-fitting
- Boil-and-bite — moulded at home for a better fit
- Custom-made — made by your dentist for the best fit, comfort and protection
A custom-made guard fits precisely and stays in place, and is the most comfortable to wear — which means your child actually keeps it in.
If a tooth is knocked out
Act fast: find the tooth, hold it by the crown (not the root), and if it’s a permanent tooth keep it in milk and see a dentist immediately — quick action can sometimes save it. Knocked-out baby teeth are not re-implanted. For ongoing protection, ask about a custom mouthguard at your child’s next pediatric visit.
