For an anxious child — or a longer procedure — conscious sedation with nitrous oxide, often called “laughing gas”, can make all the difference. It’s one of the safest and most widely used ways to help children relax at the dentist.

How does it work?

Your child breathes a gentle mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small, soft nose mask. Within minutes they feel calm, light and comfortable — while staying fully awake and able to respond. It is not general anaesthesia; your child is conscious throughout.

Is it safe?

Nitrous oxide has an excellent safety record in pediatric dentistry when administered by a trained dentist. The effects are mild and wear off within minutes of breathing normal air at the end of the visit, so your child returns to normal quickly — usually able to go back to school the same day.

  • Your child stays awake and responsive
  • A calm, comfortable feeling within minutes
  • Wears off quickly with no lingering grogginess
  • Administered and monitored by a trained pediatric dentist
