Brushing is essential, but two simple, painless treatments give children’s teeth extra protection exactly where they need it most: dental sealants and fluoride.
What are dental sealants?
Back teeth (molars) have deep grooves that trap food and are hard to clean — a common spot for cavities. A sealant is a thin protective coating painted onto these chewing surfaces, sealing out food and bacteria. It’s quick and painless with no drilling, and is usually applied to the permanent molars as they come through (around ages six and twelve).
How does fluoride help?
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and can even reverse the earliest stages of decay. Children get it from fluoride toothpaste and, where helpful, from professional fluoride applications at the clinic. We’ll always advise the right amount of toothpaste for your child’s age.
- Sealants shield the grooves of the back teeth
- Fluoride strengthens enamel against acid attacks
- Both are painless, quick and evidence-based
- Together they significantly cut the risk of cavities
Part of a prevention plan
Sealants and fluoride work best alongside good brushing, a sensible diet and regular check-ups. Ask about them at your child’s next pediatric visit.
